2021 Tallawanta Vineyard Shiraz
MEMBERS ONLY

Hunter Valley, NSW

Beautiful mid-density colour, lifted cool year spice and ripe berry fruits. Some char and bacon aromas from the French oak are noticeable on the palate. At 13% alcohol, the wine has a medium-bodied palate, red berry fruit and soft tannins which carry through to the finish. A classic medium-weight Hunter Valley red wine that is a lovely drink as a young wine, and like all our Hunter Valley Shiraz, will age beautifully.

Wine Profile
Winemaker Comments
For Hunter Valley grape growers, pre-vintage discussion is all about the weather. 2021 saw a complete turnaround from the previous four dry years in the Hunter, with a firm La Nina cycle making for a wet season. Pokolbin had reached its annual rainfall by the end of October and we ended up receiving 1030mm for 2020. It is difficult to recall a year where we have been closer to the edge of disaster in the Hunter Valley, with the prospect of not picking either whites or reds becoming a real possibility with a few more wet days in late December. Thankfully the sun came out and the last of the Tallawanta Vineyard was picked on the 23rd of February, resulting in fine, fragrant Shiraz. Handpicking this fruit has resulted in a shiraz full of finesse.
Food Pairing
Enjoy with pork, or lamb and rosemary sausages.
Production
Processing started with 3-4 day cold soaking and then 4-5 day ferment at 24-26C. The vineyard is on heavy clay similar to the Graveyard Vineyard with more stone on the top of the ridge, giving way to darker loam soil at the bottom of the hill. The oak regime for this wine is 100% French oak, with no new oak.
Drink
Drinking well now but will age gracefully.
