A quintessential Hunter Valley medium-bodied Shiraz with a very appealing, medium-density colour and youthful tints on the rim. The nose has lifted red fruit, pastille and subtle spice aromas. Ripe cherry flavours and soft tannins feature on the palate with softly integrated French oak. A perfect Hunter Valley Shiraz for the medium to long term.

Vinification
Processing started with a 3-4 day cold soaking and then an 8-10 day ferment at 26-28C. The vineyard is on dark loam soil and gives a more chocolate character to those in red soil. The oak regime for this wine is 100% French oak, none of it new.
Winemaker Comments
Brokenwood has managed the Mistress Block Vineyard and made wine from it since the late 1980s. The vineyard is now owned by Iain Riggs and Sally Margan, with the vines over 50 years old and planted on a steep, east-facing slope. It is a perfect site to avoid the hot summer heat. The dark loam soil absorbs the heat, and the grapes are in shade for the latter part of the afternoon. A season with many similarities to 2021 but overall of higher quality. La Nina once again made for a cool, wet season, albeit tempered by consistent breeze, which kept the canopy dry and disease at bay. Pokolbin had reached its annual rainfall by the end of November, with it being the wettest November on record. We ended up receiving 956mm for 2021. it was one of the latest harvests in the Hunter in many years. Picking was conducted under cool, cloudy skies. Thankfully, the sun came out, and the Mistress Block was picked on the 22nd of February under cool, cloudy skies.

Pairs well with osso bucco, steak, lamb and cheese.
Drink
Drinking well now but will reward medium term cellaring.
