2022 Verona Vineyard Shiraz
Hunter Valley, NSW
A lovely mid-density colour with purple hues. Classic Hunter Valley red fruit with bramble spice on the nose. The ripe berry fruit carries onto the palate, with the natural fruit acid and fine tannin giving great length. Some liquorice notes to finish. A classic medium weight Hunter Valley Shiraz that will age gracefully over the medium term.

Wine Profile
Vinification
Processing started with a 3-4 day cold soaking and then a 4-5 day
ferment at 24-26C. The vineyard is on heavy clay, similar to the Graveyard Vineyard but the southerly aspect gives a more floral character. The oak regime for this wine is 100% French oak puncheon, with no new oak.
Winemaker Comments
The Verona Vineyard is across the road from our Graveyard Vineyard and has been under Brokenwood’s care for the past 17 years.
First planted in 1968 on a gentle south-facing slope, with subsequent
plantings in 2002, the original cuttings are from old vineyards in the region. This is the eighth bottling of Verona as a Single Vineyard wine.
2022 was a season with many similarities to 2021 but overall of higher quality. La Nina once again made for a cool, wet season, albeit
tempered by consistent breeze, which kept the canopy dry and
disease at bay. Pokolbin had reached its annual rainfall by the end of November, with it being the wettest November on record. We received 956mm for 2021, pushing it to be one of the latest harvests in the Hunter in many years. Picking was conducted under cool, cloudy skies. Thankfully the sun came out and the last of the Verona Vineyard was picked on the 23rd of February, resulting in fine, fragrant Shiraz.
Food Pairing
Osso bucco, steak, lamb and cheese.
Drink
