2023 Semillon
WINE OF THE MONTH

Hunter Valley, NSW

Vibrant in colour, with lots of luminous green tints. Lovely florals and apple blossom aromas. Mouth-filling flavours of lime juice, green apple and lemon pith balance the zesty acid backbone. The flavours linger on for quite some time, similar to the 2022, a classic Hunter Valley Semillon to enjoy now or age gracefully.

Wine Profile
Vinification
Harvesting was all done by hand. The fruit was crushed, chilled and pressed immediately. Neutral yeasts were used for the fermentation in stainless steel and bottled in May. No oak or malolactic fermentation.
Winemaker Comments
Our third consecutive wet year, La Nina continued to make herself known though the first three quarters of the year, with widespread floods again experienced across South Eastern Australia. Up to the 31st of December 2022 we received 1365.5mm of rain with 97 rain days at Brokenwood. Pokolbin reached its annual rainfall by the end of June, with 2022 the wettest year that we have had on record. The start of the growing season was particularly challenging with vineyard access and Downy Mildew pressure a constant issue. Thankfully the weather cleared up in late October, with relatively benign conditions taking us through the final two months of the year and into January. Fruit condition and canopy were excellent despite the cool summer. This resulted late harvest in the Hunter with no Semillon being picked until February and the last not being picked until the 18th of February. Picking was conducted under cool, clear skies.
Food Pairing
Asian food, any seafood especially freshly shucked oysters.
Drink
Drinking well now but will improve with further bottle age.
